Canada’s assisted suicide program has some serious problems. They’re pushing people with disabilities to suicide rather than provide enough money and community support for them to have a decent quality of life. A paralympic athlete was offered it and she was justifiably offended.

In the abstract, I’m in favor of it. There needs to be significant thought put into how it’s implemented though, and it can’t be done in lieu of a reasonable quality of life for disabled people like Canada did.

I’ve read Consider Phlebas, due to either your or another lemmings’ recommendation and it’s very ‘80s sci fi in writing style. I felt it required a bit too much attention for a good audio book at work, but wasn’t really interesting enough to pick up the physical book. Player of Games is supposed to be very different, is it worth giving it a shot or is Iain Banks’ writing just not to my taste?

I started using Bazzite last year and it’s fantastic, but modding seems to be a bit of a headache on it right now. I think Nexus Mod Manager is going to really help that once its got more than Stardew working though.

Is that true everywhere or just in the US? I know that, at least a few years ago, a bunch of banking software in the US was still in COBOL but parts of Western Europe were modernizing their banking industry. I’m probably going back to school for computer science in the fall and had been considering trying to learn COBOL in my free time, or learning more Fortran (I have actually taken a programming class with Fortran, but because it was aimed at beginners it didn’t really go in depth, but I bet it’d look good on certain resumes). It’s looking like my future is in Europe somewhere, so I’m keeping that in the back of my mind while making decisions.
