I forgot where but some time in the last 3 hours I read that the goal for steamOS is to be supported on all PCs, though it’s an ongoing effort.

I’ve thought about this a bunch. The christian god being omnipotent and benevolent is contradictory to the bible and also just the state of the world. So what if there actually is some god (or multiple) but these entities are far from omnipotent, really can’t meddle all that much and maybe don’t really care in the first place.

I don’t think it’s true (even if it seems more plausible than any religion actually being completely right) but it’s just funny to me to imagine that all religions could just be the result of some higher dimensional beings playing with our planet out of boredom, and humans just ascribed far too much power to them.

I first looked up porn online around that age and never had that kind of image of sex at any point. No idea if that’s due to my personality, the fact that I read a lot of people’s perspectives online which told me porn is unrealistic, or just that I had plenty of idea what sex was about at 13 because of course I had questions before then and any answer I got emphasized the part where both parties involved enjoy it and love each other.

Maybe a bit of all of them. But I really think that while trying to restrict porn access for minors a little more than an “are you 18” pop-up is probably a good thing, it needs to be without violating any adult’s privacy and the main way to prevent damage is and always will be better education.

Well, it’s about maximum profit. So if they could make more, it’s insane that they wouldn’t. But it might be that profit in the short term was higher by not spending as much money on R&D, and if there’s one thing stock markets are great at it’s incentivizing short term profit over long term viability.

Smartphones aren’t the issue. You can access the internet in other ways. This feels very boomer yelling at clouds.

That said, as a recommendation, sure why not. People do seem a bit too glued to their phones overall. But I don’t think that’s anything new.

I also don’t know anything about japanese laws, so I have no idea if this is a concern, but anything potentially enforcable that cuts into people’s freedom arbitrarily makes alarm bells go off in my head.

According to the statement someone else linked now, they will ask devs about whether they comply with the payment processors’ terms, and it sounds like those processors will otherwise be unavailable. They just had to blanket remove like this for now because they don’t actually have sufficient knowledge about all the games’ content.

We’ll see what will happen, and if it turns out devs are getting screwed in the long run, someone will fill the new market niche anyway.

And I’d bet that a significant portion of that voting block also does not have a favourable view of israel, so uh what? Someone being jewish doesn’t mean they automatically agree with israels actions, unlike what israeli propaganda would like you to believe.

Yeah, what people forget is that even average americans (and central/northern europeans and some other plaves) are quite wealthy from a global perspective. Many people on lemmy, self included, are in that global 10%.

And many of those emissions aren’t something you can just avoid either, they often come as a result of being a user of local infrastructure etc.

Many countries have restrictions on what you can and cannot post (hate speech being a common one). Turkey in particular has been moving towards autocracy over the last decade or so, so I wouldn’t be surprised (to be clear this is speculation feel free to correct me) if it had restrictions on lgbt issues or political dissent or something.

As much as it sounds good, this is not an argument that will convince anyone who is against DEI (and honestly while DEI usually seems implemented quite well it’s not any better of an argument than “North Korea is called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, so they’re a democracy”).

The people that are against DEI mostly fall in 2 categories. One is flat out racists, which have no issues being against these values. The other are those that believe that the implementation of DEI is in some way bad and discriminatory. This is ime often based on sensationalized news about a few edge cases or stories that were twisted to a degree where they’re basically made up. They don’t need to be told that diversity, equity and inclusion are good values, they need to be informed about the fearmongering being just that.

Though with what trump is doing I suspect many of the latter category are already realizing that trumps version of “getting rid of DEI” is doing exactly the bad things they were told DEI does, so maybe we’re already mostly left with the racists.

There’s one in the garage of my apartment building. All i can think about when I see it is what a giant douche bag you have to be to buy something like that while living in a big city.

One of the major draws of discord is the fact that they host the servers for you, for free. Anyone can make an account, click a button, and have a discord server.

Afaik matrix does allow this (haven’t used it personally) but it’s something where I am a bit worried about hosting costs if it reaches a large scale. (Also unsure about how the matrix protocol works precisely, but if defederation is a thing which I feel like it has to be, I can see it leading to huge pains since discords use case is often about being part of a specific communitu, as opposed to twitter or reddit. Being unable to join a groip or see some messsges because of federation issues would be a major headache).

More and more I believe that Mozilla’s current leadership are acting in their own self interest, not for the public good.

I think the salary alone is enough evidence of that. There’s a point, specifics of which will depend on your living situation, at which wanting a higher salary requires the same infinite greed that becoming a billionaire requires. And I’m very sure that this point is far below 1 million dollars a year. Mozilla’s CEO makes over 6 million.

If you feel like you deserve that, you are not fit to lead a nonprofit. You have already proven that you care more about giving yourself obscene wealth than about the benefit of others.
