Since at some point recently. You can still email files (epub not mobi now) to your kindle, but usb transfer doesn’t work any more.

Good luck with that. Where I live all public hospital grounds have been declared no-smoking zones. I’ve seen patients in wheelchairs sparking up under the no-smoking sign right outside the entrance.

Neil Stephenson’s “In the Beginning… Was the Command Line” (1999) touches on this. He compares Microsoft to a station wagon vs Linux as a free tank. People keep buying the station wagon because no-one wants to learn how to drive a tank, even if it’s free. (Apple is a luxury car in his analogy.)

My first computer ran on MS-DOS, and I’ve seen Windows hiding DOS deeper and deeper behind the GUI. And now AI… ugh. I’ve been tinkering with Linux on old laptops so I’m ready for the move, it’s just finding the time.

Shout-out to the nice Indian gentleman whose YouTube video walked me through disassembling an ancient laptop so I could add a bit of RAM. I ended with a few leftover screws and a rattle, but it worked! Still chuntering away (slowly, it’s geriatric) on Linux. I was amazed to find a video of the exact model.

That’s true actually - they are escalating pretty hard already.

As a long-term peacenik though, I hate the thought of gun battles on the streets. I wish you all the very best. I first visited the US in 1976 and have toured around a lot since then. My one single bad experience was Homeland Security when transiting through LAX. We’re tourists not terrorists, jeez cool your jets! I can’t imagine how bad ICE is.

I suspect your government would love it if you started shooting. They’d declare martial law. Goodbye elections, hello police state.
