People already explained that salt was relatively easy to get, steps to make bread are not that complicated and probably occured through trial and error, and for ale, it’s quite probably just cereals left to soak in water too long + natural yeast and you get an accidental alcohol. The trickiest part is to finetune the process to make it a bit consistent, but finding it out is very easy

From what i get from this article, this is technically true for one tree, but not for the forest, for which there is a peak in carbon capture at some point (when the canopy closes says the article), and then it can either stabilize either slowly decline. There are other huge advantages to keeping old forests intact though, especially regarding biodiversity.

Clearly, and i never said the opposite.

Iran which was tolerable to media a few months ago
In what parallel reality do you live in ? It has been classified as one of the worse country for press freedom since years by RSF, they shutdown internet when things get out of hand and banned a lot of social medias.

Here is the main blog post that i remembered : it has a follow up, a more scientific version, and uses two other articles as a basis, so you might want to dig around what they mention in the introduction.
It is indeed a quite technical discovery, and it still lacks complete and wider analysis, but it is very interesting for the fact that it kinda invalidates the common gut feeling that llms are pure lucky random.

Oh yes, cost of training are ofc a great loss here, it’s not optimized at all, and it’s stuck at an average level.
Interestingly, i believe some people did research on it and found some parameters in the model that seemed to represent the state of the chess board (as in, they seem to reflect the current state of the board, and when artificially modified, the model takes modification into account in its playing). It was used by a french youtuber to show how LLMs can somehow have a kinda representation of the world. I can try to get the sources back if you’re interested.

Actually, a very specific model (chatgpt3.5-turbo-instruct) was pretty good at chess (around 1700 elo if i remember correctly).

Tbf, that’s the case for a lot of countries, so Russia is not so far ahead, though it sure is!

I agree, having experienced this especially on mathematics pages. But on the other hand, from my experience, the whole article is very technical in those cases : I’m not sure making a summary would help, and im not sure you can provide a summary both correct and easily understandable in those cases.

I mean i get your point and i’m with you, but on surface, watching Doctor Who and wondering ‘Who is that Doctor’ seems like a win to me.

I was very sceptical at first, but this article kinda convinced me. I think it still has some bad biases (it often only considers 1 chatgpt request in its comparisons, when in reality you quickly make dozens of them, it often says ‘how weird to try and save tiny amounts of energy’ when we do that already with lights when leaving rooms, water when brushing teeths, it focuses on energy (to train, cool and generate electricity) and not on logistics and hardware required), but overall two arguments got me :
Still probably cant hurt to boycott that stuff, but it’d be more useful to use less social media, especially those with videos or pictures, and watch videos in 140p

Well just because there are nazis dudes in an organization does not make it nazi itself. After the collapse of fascism, a lot of fascists kept or acquired important roles, there were nazi cunts in french administration, and i dont think it made the administration automatically nazi.
Since NATO was not iniated by nazis, nor by Germany, and has no nazi goals, i’m not sure if we can say that the line between Nazi Germany is very straight. It exists sure, but it’s probably not straight and certainly quite thin.

From the end of the article
But despite supporting Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale war, he was at a military recruitment center in Moscow, alongside other foreign nationals, on September 5, 2023, Russian border data shows.
His social media posts show a distinct change in his views — one identified by Important Stories as belonging to Gloss suggest he believed in conspiracy theories involving Ukraine, and claimed NATO was an evolution of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party.

From the article :
There are examples of drone operators from earlier this year being able to trace the cables back to the positions from where they were launched and target the enemy crews. But if this technique was a successful one, fibre optic drones would have disappeared as soon as they appeared on the battlefield, when – from presidents to workshops – all the talk is of increasing numbers.

You may want to beneficiate from little performance boost even though you mostly don’t need it and still need python’s advantages. Being interested in performance isnt always looking for the very best performance there is out of any language, it can also be using little tips to go a tiny bit faster when you can.

The amount of bad faith they display is unbelievable, between their prior allegations that corrupted politicians should be banned from politics for life, and their absence of limits in metaphores : last quote i saw was this dumbfuck saying that “the nuclear weapon of the judiciary system was used against [her]”
I mean, it’s equivalent to the minimum salary i guess. I think they’re european, and in france the minimum salary is around 1800€ before taxes. That’s not a lot in the absolute, but in the foss world, it is quite comfortable.
