For email, honestly, it’s a major fucking pain in the ass, but simply buy your own domain and learn how to host it in an agnostic way you can migrate if needed. But just to emphasize: yes, self hosting email sucks tremendously, I know.

The Office suite was simple to use and performant. Nowadays I watched a college professor struggle for 8 minutes trying to figure out how to save a file locally rather than saving it to OneDrive, because they redesigned everything around that. It also takes an obnoxiously long time to launch, it keeps popping up some Copilot button in inconvenient places too.
We are talking about operating system adoption.

I’m still waiting for somebody to prove any of these statements are true. And I say that as somebody working in a company that demands that several employees use AI - all I see is that they now take extra time manually fixing whatever bad output the LLM produced, and slowly losing their ability to communicate without first consulting ChatGPT, which is both slow and concerning.

This has been changed if you’re lucky enough to have a recent Android version, but not long ago any gallery app sideloaded from external sources couldn’t be set as the system gallery, meaning managing pictures was really annoying because any changes required a pop up confirmation.

Everything related to privacy and security requires as a fundamental premise that you select your threat model. Who are you? What data do you want to protect? From whom, and how bad would it be to fail?
Most people skip this step, and then keep acting either surprised or over/under reacting to any given news. There are people out there that can’t use email - regardless of who hosts what. There are people out there that would be fine with Gmail.
