I loved last.fm. Used it for like a decade until I stopped caring about logging every time I listened to something. Was real good at finding music I liked. I used to view it as a reflection of me and then I got older and stopped caring about public reflections of myself

From my memories, the price of appliances haven’t changed much in the last couple of decades. They maintain or increase margins with cheaper parts, less QA, looser performance tolerances while keeping the same sticker price. Whatever the quality sacrifice equivalent word for shrinkflation

Practically everyone I’m friends with hates imperialism and colonialism but loves the benefits of visiting poor countries that were victims of imperialism/colonialism and feeling special because of the money they bring and the lack of developed domestic entertainment/art industries so that theirs and their countries artist/entertainers are way more competitive there
Everyone’s pretty hypocritical. People that get mad at other people for working for Google are extra and easily ignored. Damn all those Boeing and Airbus employees for working for huge military contractors. When a company gets big enough, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re lobbying for something terrible to benefit themselves.
I’m continuously confused how these standards don’t seem to apply to bank tellers, finance in general, large chain retail, fast food, large agriculture companies, fashion industry, film industry, music industry, alcohol, pharmaceutical, … etc
Some people fight the most inconsequential battles. If you work for JP Morgan Chase and someone gives you the cold shoulder or lectures you because so, ignore them. It’s such a small crowd that’s like that that it won’t change your lifestyle. It’s not like if you quit and struggled to find work and started to teeter on ruin that they’d be there for you. And someone like that probably fights so many small inconsequence battles that they’d be exhausting to be around anyways. And fighting such small inconsequential battles produces so little. Tagging, down with the oligarchy in a bathroom stall or sidewalk day to day. It’s small bubble activism

It’s still worse than before. Really need to break mobile away from Google and Apple. Preferably as close to standard Linux as possible

T&T not giving this energy about verifying whether all the people killed by the US on small boats are drug traffickers. Maybe they want to be the next Israel or Rwanda as the regional hammer for the the US

React Native applications may be nice if that in any way ever helps popular media streaming applications make their way to normal Linux even just make it as applications distributed in like Steam for SteamOS

They don’t want kids to know too well how their government operates domestically and internationally. Don’t want kids to learn history much better than the watered down version they learn in school

Everyone should probably just assume that even if this fails this go around, it will succeed eventually and keep building and adopting tools to circumvent these rules

Fast forward to July 2025, Denmark reintroduced Chat Control as a top legislative priority on its first day of Presidency. While keeping the Belgian approach of limiting scanning to URLs and multimedia files, many experts feel that the text goes back to where it started – it reintroduces the indiscriminate scanning of unknown CSAM material, too.
The Danish proposal introduces new obligations for all messaging services operating in Europe to scan users’ chats – even if they’re encrypted – in the search for both known and unknown CSAM material.
Crucially, the mandatory scanning is expected to occur directly on the device before messages get encrypted, targeting shared URLs, pictures, and videos. Only governments and military accounts are excluded from the scope of the bill.
First day and that’s their most pressing concern, scanning everyones communications. This is EU, but after the Snowden leaks I knew it would all just be made legal since it was public knowledge then. Now trending towards making it all indiscriminate and mandatory. For a long time now I’ve come to always expect surveillance powers to eventually be abused. Damn near anyone paying attention knows this isn’t about child porn

I’ve been following this since the initial Newpipe Linux flatpak release. I find it more exciting than Waydroid even though Waydroid is way more functional today

Nobel peace prize has been a joke for a very long time now like damn near all the lights camera flash red carpet awards of the past century

I don’t care how you feel about these countries, economic interdependence and globalism has been advertised as the path to preventing wars. The idea of pitting India against China was always messed up. It’s pretty much just trying to get former colonial/genocide targets of the western world to try to kill each other for us to take advantage of the remnants.
Better relations between China and India means far less likely chance of war which would be devastating even if though such a war wouldn’t make most of us here all that in our feelings. Like how you don’t see people all in their feelings about war in the border regions of Congo and Rwanda. Or the Sudan civil war. The multidecade meddling in Somalia to the current state of Somalian civil war. The civil war in Ethiopia/Tigray was practical non-news for being so deadly.
We should want good international relations between these countries. And it’s not like India doesn’t have good reason to be wary of closer American and European relations

I am not surprised. Europe isn’t constant on the same level of racism across it but it’s definitely worse everywhere compared to the US. A lot more acceptable to say something racist to non-white people and then be like, it’s just a joke have a sense of humor just trying to lighten the mood. Like step into a bar and be the wrong color and the music stops and you’re stared at (not joking random bars in Dusseldorf and Stuttgart)
East and nordics worse than west but the west has Italy and Spain. Even then, better in the west but outside of the large cities that are also international tourist destinations it’s rough to not be white.
And then the significance of far right political parties and neo Nazi orgs always looked worse in Europe to me. In the US the 2 party system dulls out identity politics a bit even though it’s getting worse whereas a 5-30% minority party that’s primarily about ethnocentrism is fully possible across European countries and wield a strong influence in coalition forming. In the US, be more scared of law enforcement organizations. Europe fear more the young populace hanging around and the old people staring and progressively law enforcement organizations
Trump was not going to stymie interest in right wing politics for much time at all. It would give way to nationalism. Anti-globalisation that always gives way to anti-immigration that always gives way to anti whatever skin color or religion isn’t the majority. Nationalism. Europe’s boiling point for centuries. Even before Trump 1 were far right/neo Nazi orgs growing in size across Europe. In my opinion because of how much more of Europe is closer to ethnostates than the US, Europe can quickly devolve into far worse than the US faster. Benefits of Europe for non-whites is the better social safety nets but in terms of institutionalized/unaddressed racial bias/casual racism - all over Europe it’s worse than the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The US just makes more headlines.
A joke is that the worst thing for Mexico is being next door to the US. The joke can swap the US for Europe and stick pretty much every country across Asia, Africa, and Oceania for Mexico. If you go back before like Monroe, replace the US with European countries for the former native nations in the americas
Talk about assimilation of immigrants in Europe compared to the US always sounded weird to me. Like there needs to be some major pervasive program to make immigrants like locals however the US manages to do. In the US first and second gen immigrants mostly live in neighborhoods composed of similar background people like Europeans complain about and then by 3rd generation they’re mostly fully assimilated but disadvantaged minorities if they’re not white but also not necessarily doing worse economically. Usually disadvantaged socially. Disadvantaged in media. There’s plenty of effort for higher represeation for black people in everything but like no effort for non-black minorities. Assimilation programs in the US are practically non-existent or nothing burgers. Little effort just Americans mostly don’t think about assimilation programs. Assimilate to what defined culture. Things monoculture from the ones born in the US. Out in Europe people are so close to saying reeducation camps for immigrants

I’m not negative on this. Streaming apps are easy to cancel and move to something else. Roku will probably raise the price someday and when it’s too high, shift off. I checked Roku originals on Wikipedia and they have barely anything significant. A small amount of feature films they have distribution rights to. TV shows, nothing original narrative seems like a hit. Then a bunch of reality shows and like cooking shows.
They’re a very long way away from being able to get subscribers on the basis of their original content. Not even Sony has a general streaming service and under them are a bunch of hit TV shows and movies along with their decades of back catalog. Not planning to sub but if I’m insanely bored, I can sub for a month and find some old TV show comedy to put in the background

Whenever it seems like people are saying there’s a solid RVA23 dev board out there, I’ll buy it especially if it has a pcie slot on it

Over the years I think Honda and Toyota are the two brands I most commonly see an old guy managing to keep running well for 30+ years and hyper focused on wanting to break 500k miles or dreaming of hitting 1 million miles someday

Tariffs be damned, I will not buy an American brand car. They’ve been mediocre my whole life and it’s always been easier to source parts for Hondas and Toyotas. I’m not sure how repairable any EV is, but I doubt American brands will top the charts of value in repairability in my lifetime

One observer has been spectating and commentating on Mozilla since before it was a foundation – one of its original co-developers, Jamie Zawinksi
…
Zawinski has repeatedly said:
Now hear me out, but What If…? browser development was in the hands of some kind of nonprofit organization?
In my humble but correct opinion, Mozilla should be doing two things and two things only:
- Building THE reference implementation web browser, and
- Being a jugular-snapping attack dog on standards committees.
- There is no 3.
This makes sense to me. I initially thought everything that Proton does, that should have been Mozilla. They should have been a collection of services to compete with like O365 and Google One. So I didn’t see a problem with Mozilla selling a VPN, even though if I remember right it being just a Mullvad rebrand.
Right now to me it looks like Proton is the closest mostly missing a web browser and a more cloud office offering.
Mozilla functioning more as the reference browser for others to finish packaging and supporting sounds good to me because Mozilla doesn’t seem to be great at attracting general users or even picking what businesses to try and break into.
Linux kernel devs do Linux kernel development and distros small and large do the integration with everything else needed for an operating system, branding, support, etc. Sounds like Mozilla should have been the core devs for a number of reference software projects. Firefox browser engine. Maybe an equivalent to Electron based on Servo. Shouldn’t have dropped Rust and been the steward for the reference Rust compiler. Could have been the steward for FirefoxOS/KaiOS/etc. Support PostmarketOS maybe.
Linux foundation stewards or contributes to all sorts of software projects not just the kernel but they’re all pretty much things that are relevant for users of Linux operating systems. Mozilla could have found some software centric focus that in some way came together thematically. I would guess privacy focused browser and software services
iPhones are too locked down for the hardware they have. I’m writing this on an iPhone 15 …
The foldable I like the most I’ve seen are the Motorola razrs. That’s vertical. The best fat foldables are going to be Android because of all the video game emulators for Android
