Kind of a tangent, but what really scares me about the “turn on red” rule is that it’s not the same around the globe.
There are so many international drivers here in Japan that turn left at a red light without realizing that’s completely illegal. It catches pedestrians completely off guard. I think on Montreal Island you couldn’t do this either.
Stopping at a red light when wanting to turn isn’t some rare, obscure situation, so people who are travelling have to BE ABSOLUTELY SURE about this rule before they make use of their international lisence.
I have sort of the opposite problem. My wife and I moved to Japan in our 20s and it was pretty damn easy because I’m a citizen and I had family help me find an apartment for us. We were 100% set in terms of basic necessities in like a week and could start job hunting immediately. Now that I’m in my 40s, we’re trying to go back to Canada so we can take care of our parents more and let the kids experience Canadian schools, but it’s so god damn expensive to do anything.

I have to politely disagree with your opinion of Europe being more mature and level-headed. They seem that way now, but they’ve repeatedly fucked over one another throughout history. They aren’t magically immune to internal/external bullshit just because it’s been around longer.
Interesting. In Japanese, we have the concept of ateji, where we just put Chinese characters for the sound so we just know not to take the meanings so literally. But we do tend to pick nice or neutral-sounding characters. i.e. we wouldn’t use characters like 死 or 糞 for the sound lol. This is the same for peoples’ names.
My heart aches for them. Truly.

As a translator, I have to say machine translations are really good if you just want to get the gist of things. If all you want is to understand 90% of what’s written and you can live with the margin of error, then I’m not gonna try to convince you to hire me.
But if you need to understand 99.9% then a human is required because a machine just will not understand the nuance or have a larger context unless instructed. Localizing is another issue too, you’ll have to take into consideration the cultural nuance of the target language. Localizing software is even more niche because you’re often limited in character count for the source language which machines often misunderstand, and the same limitation for the target language that a machine may not account for.
tl;dr - hire me if you want good localization
Not trying to single out the Chinese, but it would be nice to be able to walk around my own city without having to dodging hordes of tourists. I understand that many of us rely on the tourism industry to put food on the table, but damn, I wish we could ease it a little :(
